Colleges Against Cancer is a nationwide collaboration of college students, faculty and staff dedicated to saving lives from cancer by initiating and supporting programs of the American Cancer Society in college communities.
I was first involved with UWSP’s chapter of Colleges Against Cancer as a member of the Food and Silent Auction Committee for the 2010 Relay For Life. We communicated with local businesses to secure food and raffle basket items for the event. As a Planning Committee member I also supported in other aspects of event preparation and was present for the entire event assisting with set-up, raffle ticket sales, and clean-up.
I was then asked be a Co-Chair for Colleges Against Cancer for the 2010-2011 school year and also served as the Relay For Life Online Chair. This position was much more demanding and required many hours of planning and promoting cancer-awareness events as well as recruiting and communicating with Relay For Life participants through a variety of platforms.
My responsibilities included:
- Creatively engaging the campus in cancer awareness events designed to fundraise for the American Cancer Society. Events included Bowling for Boobs, The Great American Smokeout and Relay For Life
- Communicating with and motivating Relay for Life teams through email, website, blog and social media
- Organizing and continuously updated individual and team Relay for Life donations
Our communication efforts helped raise over $65,000 in 2010 and 2011.
